Sweden: Scania’s third generation ethanol engine debuts in Stockholm bus fleet

Scania has announced the first deliveries of buses featuring its third generation ethanol engine. The first ten vehicles have gone to Busslink, the transport company which co-ordinates the city-centre operations of Stockholm Transport (SL).

Compared to a city bus run on diesel fuel, an ethanol bus reduces fossil carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90%, Scania claims.

SL first began using renewable fuels in its public transport fleet in the 1980s. Transit buses in central Stockholm have run on ethanol or biogas only for several years now. Most of these, as well as many suburban public transport buses around the Swedish capital, are Scania ethanol buses (some 400 in all). SL has decided to buy only buses that operate on renewable fuels from 2010 onwards.

Scania notes that it has now supplied a total of 600 ethanol buses to Swedish cities. The OEM’s third generation of ethanol engines are also being adapted for use in distribution trucks, the company states.

The company’s ethanol engines meet the Euro 5 emission standards which become mandatory in 2009, and the even tighter EEV standards, without exhaust aftertreatment. Their technology is based on exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
