Strong demand in Q4 2020, global smart speaker sales exceeded 150 million units

A recent research report from Strategy Analytics’ Smart Speakers and Screens service shows that global smart speaker sales reached record levels in 2020, despite the severe market challenges caused by the Covid-19 outbreak. New models from Apple, Amazon, Google, Alibaba and Baidu arrive in time for the all-important Christmas sales season, bringing a positive end to a difficult year. In Q4 2020, smart screens accounted for 26% of the total smart speaker market, up from 22% in Q4 2019. The growing availability of models of different sizes and price points has driven strong growth in smart screens.

Amazon’s Echo speakers returned to growth in Q4 2020 after two consecutive quarters of declining sales, driven by Prime Day delays and strong seasonal demand, propelling Amazon to lead the overall smart speaker market with a 28.3% market share. Google came in second with a 22.6 percent market share, but its shipments fell slightly compared to last year. Baidu and Alibaba put their first-half challenges behind them and had a strong year — they both posted strong double-digit growth. Apple had a great quarter — its global shipments rose 74% year over year after launching the $99 HomePod Mini in November. Apple’s market share reached a record 7.8% in Q4 2020, up 3.1% from the previous year.
