North American semiconductor equipment shipments hit a new high in 2020

The demand for advanced semiconductor processes continues to grow. The Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) announced that North American semiconductor equipment manufacturers shipped $2.65 billion in August, rewriting a new monthly high since 2020, up from the final July figure of $2.57 billion 3.0%, up 32.5% from $2.00 billion in the same period in 2019.

Cao Shilun, SEMI’s global marketing chief and president of Taiwan, said that North American equipment manufacturers’ sales performed well in August, and they also showed strong growth compared with the same period in 2019. Despite the supply chain uncertainty that the latest sanctions may bring, the market demand for semiconductor equipment continues to grow.

In fact, TSMC continues to promote the development of advanced process technology, from the 5nm process that has entered mass production, to the 3nm and 2nm process technologies that are being planned, plus the Zhunan Advanced Packaging Factory being planned and built, representing the next few years. TSMC’s investment in Taiwan is expected to exceed NT$1 trillion, equivalent to more than US$30 billion, making it one of the main drivers for the growth of the global semiconductor equipment market.

In addition, Micron’s layout in Taiwan is the most eye-catching in the storage market. At present, the A3 plant of Zhongke is expected to be in place in the second half of the year, and the A5 plant will also determine whether to expand in 2021. In addition, Macronix and Winbond will also start expansion plans, which will once again boost the market demand for semiconductor equipment.

The legal person said that although the United States has recently expanded its ban on Huawei, and it has also been reported that it intends to include SMIC on the Entity List, the pattern of China’s development of self-made semiconductors has not changed. Therefore, although it is difficult to obtain advanced semiconductor equipment, its mature semiconductor equipment needs. It is still a major growth driver for the global semiconductor equipment market.

SEMI’s latest World Fab Forecast report shows 21 new fab construction plans starting in 2020. China’s 9 fabs are the top new plans, followed by Taiwan’s 5 and Southeast Asia’s 2 each in the Americas, 1 each in Japan, South Korea and Europe/Middle East, and 18 new plants are planned around the world in 2021. The industry expects that the effect of new equipment in new factories and the demand for equipment renewal of old factories show that the amount of shipments in the semiconductor equipment market is still expected to continue to rise in the future.
